STRUCTURE AND BODY

In the second assignment, students are required to build a 1:1 bamboo activity structure for the USJ 2 Kebun Komuniti. Before kick starting this project, students are required to attend lectures and tutorials so as workshops to further understand the basic anthropometry and ergonomics, construction details, the basic knowledge of the bamboo so as the safety before building the bamboo structure. Students were given five activities which are celebrating, resting, safe-keeping, snoozing and viewing. Therefore, each group (20 students) were to choose one activity by spinning the wheel. Each group then starts to brainstorms ideas and research on each bamboo activity structure by applying the understanding of anthropometry and ergonomics and the design intension. Moreover, each group are also encourage to develop  1:10/1:20 scale test models and a final model using satay sticks before constructing the actual 1:1 bamboo structure with the size of 8mᶟ. Furthermore, each group also required to present verbally for 15 minute along with A2 presentation board (portrait) as a communicative way to let lecturers and tutors to have further understanding of each group's designs and ideas. Students are required to include in A2 presentation boards are: 1:10 orthographic drawings (one floor plan, top view, section and two elevations) that indicates the north point so as human figure(1), one 1:10/1:20 exploded axonometric(2), three details drawings that shows the assembly methods and materiality in the scale of 1:5(3) so as produce one (100x100mm) abstract tattoo stamp per student(4) manually and monochromatically. Last but not least, each group are also required to compile all initial sketch, design ideas, exploration and construction process in A3 format.

MOCKUP   MODEL 2

My teammates and I have picked "resting" as our activity. Once we received the activity assigned to our team, we get to quickly familiarize with each other and also started to divide the work into research and design team. The research team will be examine the function of the bamboo, construction and rope-tying method so as the anthropometrics and ergonometric of a human. While for the design team, me and the other team members came out with multiple preliminary sketches and test models to choose the suitable first test model for our bamboo structure. (ps: Our group managed to capture these leftover models due to some models are damaged)

FINAL MOCKUP MODEL

While designing this final model (combination of test model one and two), our group members have contributed a lot of ideas, opinions and suggestions and this lead to some heated argument. However, all of our groupmates are very cooperative and supportive so at last we have successfully came out with the final test model by incorporating with the knowledge of the anthropometrics and ergonometric, construction methods, stability and etc.

Before we visit the site, we have divided into 3-4 groups to complete our tasks at the site such as interviewing, taking site pictures, site measurements and also record the location of the sunrise and sunset in order to understand the site better. Furthermore, we have also shown some of our test models to the resident for feedbacks and opinions. Moreover, we also have attended the bamboo workshop to further understand the construction and rope-tying method of the bamboo  structure later.

FINAL    MODEL

While constructing the 1:1 bamboo structure, we did some changes such as the beam we changed it into square, added supportation to the arch-roof, make the fences symmetrically so as the base changed it into irregular pentagon for stability and solidity.

We constructed our 1:1 bamboo structure in the campus (amphitheater) for two weeks straight so as collected some memorable moments and friendship  along the way even though it is exhausting (stay up late until midnight) and hot (under the sun). Our group members were very cooperative hence, we did it in a smoother and easier way.

After we have completed with our 1:1 bamboo structure, we began with the A2 presentation board. It took us five days (without sleep) to complete our presentation board due to the following day is the presentation day so as the day we get to "carry" our 1:1 bamboo structure to USJ 2 Kebun Komuniti. However, it rained heavily, therefore our lectures and tutors decided to postponed to Thursday during the tutorial class so that all of us could get a glimpse of other groups work. It was fun and a blessing to work with them. Last but not least, we also took a group picture before we get back to rest.
