VIRTUAL TRIP REFLECTION
My course mates and I had a virtual trip to Rio De Janeiro in Brazil. During the tour, I have learnt that this place is an unequal place because it separates the rich and the higher status citizens and the poor citizens. Usually people who are the rich with higher status citizens live in asphalt cities while the poor community lives in favelas on the hills. Due to the neglect of the government, the poor community were forced to live in a life with their own support. Living in favelas is also dangerous because there is like no law established in the areas and there are also drug gangs in narrow alleys. Not only that, the favelas are also not organized consistently. One of the largest favelas in Brazil, Rocinha is an example. After visiting the community area virtually, I personally think that there are many segments that “built and environment” can contribute to improve standard of living and a safer living environment. For example, power cables in Rocinha are being exposed to the sunlight instead of being placed underground. To ensure everyone's safety, the governments should acknowledge this issue and take immediate actions on it. Due to the payment of electricity bills some people might not be able to afford it. The operator should provide free of charge electricity to everyone so that peoples can enjoy it. It also can help them during the night for safety reason. Secondly, it can affect our mental health depending on where one lives. For example, Rocinha is a place which is unhygienic. Due to limited access to clean water, they experienced drinking dirty water. Therefore, the high chance of getting spread of infectious disease. With better township planning of infrastructure, peoples can easily access from place to another place in shortest possible time. Generally, it also provides convenience and time saving to the peoples.
